History overview

Our village was formed by the union of two separate villages, which expanded dramatically in the last century to merge into a single settlement. Originally the hamlet of Southmoor (or Draycott Moor) was part of Longworth parish. The boundaries changed and Draycott Moor became a parish in its own right. The two parishes merged in 1971 to form Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor. During the boundary changes of 1974 the area changed from being in Berkshire to Oxfordshire.

1066 (Domesday Book) Cingestun (later called Chingestune and then Kingestun) and Draicote (part of Longworth belonged to Abingdon Abbey)

16th Century (1542) John Latton bought all 3 estates which formed Kingston Bagpuize

(1574) Manor of Draycott Moor granted to the President and Fellows of St John’s College

18th and 19th centuries Kingston Bagpuize and Southmoor or Draycott Moor (part of Longworth) in the county of Berkshire

1971 The two parishes were combined to form Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor

1974 Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor became part of Oxfordshire
